When I think about it, I believe that one of the most difficult parts in our relationships with Jesus is fully trusting Him with EVERYTHING. Let me explain.
When we come to faith, it’s standard that we give our lives to Jesus. We ask for Him to forgive us of all our sins up to that point, and for Him to come into us and us into Him. I’ve blogged on here about denying ourselves fully at that moment of deciding to follow Him, and I believe that many if not most of us really do at that moment. But I think that often times, we tend to double-think the trust-factor as trials come into play.
I’ve mentioned to a few friends on other sites that one of the things I’ve been wrestling with is not worrying about anything, but giving my worries up to the Lord, fully. I heard a sermon on the radio once that if Jesus tells us not to do something, and we do it, then that’s sin. That’s basic knowledge. But then he reminded us that Jesus also told us not to worry. Wow! So if I worry, then I’m sinning, for Jesus told us not to worry about anything. 2 places I can think of off the top of my head: 1) when talking about the birds in the air and lilies in the field; 2) when He told us that instead of worrying about anything, to pray about everything. This is easier said than done, I know.
Why is it so difficult to put our full trust in Jesus?
Is it because we’re so used to being in control of everything in our lives? Is it because we’re impatient, and want signs of results immediately? Is it because we’re so used to not being able to fully trust anybody? Maybe it’s because we don’t trust that God’s will is better than our own, and want to be sure that it is, and just in case if it’s not, we want to intervene so maybe it’ll come out the way we want it to?
I think these are all valid possibilities, but I also think they’re all things we need to be honest about and lift up to the Lord regularly. Not just pray though, but also take a part in it. For if you pray for God to take away your drug addiction, then you need to get rid of the drugs, right? If you pray for God to rescue you from porn, then you need to get rid of the magazines and pictures on your computer. In the same way, when it comes to praying about not worrying, you need to take part too.
So here’s what I’ve come to learn so far about trusting God:
- Give if up to God, fully!
- Forget about it. Hard to do, yes, I know, but necessary if we are giving it up to Jesus fully.
- Trust God. Keep in mind that you will feel like you’re going through withdrawal symptoms, which include anxiety, fear, thinking up worse-case scenarios, impatience, and wanting to take it back to deal with yourself. FIGHT IT! (I did say I was wrestling) Fight yourself, pray, remind yourself that if it’s going to be taken care of, then it has to be taken care of by God, for there’s nothing you can do that He can’t do better. Depending on what it is, you may need to go out and do something to help get your mind off it.
It’s hard to trust somebody with everything, isn’t it? And it all may take some time (or it may be quick), but if you give it to Jesus fully, then the result will be His Will, fully…you’ve just got to learn to trust Him.
