Romans 4:14 – 17: If those who depend on the law are heirs, faith means nothing and the promise is worthless, because the law brings wrath. And where there is no law there is no transgression. Therefore, the promise comes by faith, so that it may be by grace and may be guaranteed to all Abraham’s offspring—not only to those who are of the law but also to those who have the faith of Abraham. He is the father of us all. As it is written: “I have made you a father of many nations.” He is our father in the sight of God, in whom he believed—the God who gives life to the dead and calls into being things that were not.
“If those who depend on the Law are heirs, then faith means nothing and God’s promises (to Abraham) are worthless.”
Remember, the Law brings wrath, not salvation, and Abraham wasn’t given the Law. Abraham, therefore, didn’t live by the Law, but by faith. Therefore, it’s not by works that we’re heirs, nor by being descendants of either of Abraham’s children, but through faith, that we’re made heirs of Abraham (father of many nations), offspring of Abraham. Notice though that God doesn’t say that Abraham will be the father of ALL nations, but only of those who have his faith in God, for the Jews in John 8:33-39, 44 argued, “We are Abraham’s descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free”, (but) Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. I know that you are Abraham’s descendants. Yet you are looking for a way to kill me, because you have no room for my word. I am telling you what I have seen in the Father’s presence, and you are doing what you have heard from your father.”
“Abraham is our father,” they answered.
“If you were Abraham’s children,” said Jesus, “then you would do what Abraham did…You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires…”
The Jews claimed Abraham as their father because of their bloodline (family tree), for he is the father of the Israelite Nation (the Jews). But, because they didn’t have faith in God, as Abe had, Jesus didn’t recognize their claim to Abe. Why? Because Abe didn’t have the Law to live by, so living by the Law doesn’t make one a child of God. Abe believed by faith. Therefore, anyone who believes by faith also may claim to be a child of Abe’s.
This is also huge because not only the Jews, but the Muslims also claim rights to Abraham through the lineage, but through Abraham’s other son, Ishmael. Again though, both Jesus and Paul explained that being descendants does not make them children of Abraham (not in terms of rights, anyway). Physical lineage, yes, but not heirs. Nor can they claim any rights to Abraham, because they continue to reject God for who He is, who He sent, and what He accomplished through Christ. It’s only through faith that somebody can claim rights to being a child of Abraham. So when you look at all this fighting and arguing and killing they’re doing with the Jews for rights of Abraham, it’s all pointless, for it’s only by faith that one can become a child of Abraham. Now, if they should want to become an heir of Abraham’s, then they would do so by repentance and through faith in Christ, for “If you were Abraham’s children,” said Jesus, “then you would do what Abraham did…You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires…”
